- Abstract
- The COVID-19 pandemic has crossed cultures and imposed a multitude of transformations on local businesses. In a context that distances itself from the typical evolution of a crisis, shopkeepers have developed several communication strategies to survive in an increasingly globalized and digital market. In this dissertation, Brussels and Ottawa, two multicultural capitals, are studied through the framework of organizational communication to understand how these strategies were constructed under the influence of culture. To this end, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten business managers and a content analysis based on Hofstede's cultural dimensions model was performed. Although our results do not reveal any major shift to digital during the pandemic, this study shows that communication strategies are significantly affected by culture, even if its influence is locally nuanced by the health crisis.
