Abstract
Textbooks are the most important pedagogical tool in language teaching. The subject of this thesis is the analysis and comparison of units devoted to work in FLE textbooks published in France and China. There are three types of textbooks: those written in France, those that have been adapted from the original French textbooks, and those written in China. Our study is rooted in intercultural theory, and key concepts include culture, values and cultural dimensionality. We conducted a qualitative methodological study using a textbook analysis form. The thesis focuses on work-related units in three types of textbooks, and our aim is to conduct a comparative study to analyze how they are designed and the values and cultures they present. We wanted to discover the values of work-related units in French textbooks from different countries and explore the different dimensions of culture represented in French textbooks. As a result of our analyses, we came to the conclusion that French FLE textbooks attach greater importance to the unit of work than the Chinese FLE textbook. The values conveyed and the cultures demonstrated in the FLE textbooks do not correspond exactly to the stereotyped image of France. The culture and values underpinning the foreign language are constructed and transmitted by the writers both implicitly and explicitly. The author conceals himself by constructing the transmission of values, but it is inevitable that he incorporates himself into this dynamic process. Finally, we discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the three manuals as well as the limitations of this study and hope to suggest possible ideas for future researchers to extend and improve this study.
