- Abstract
- Objective: Asymmetrical musculoarticular stiffness (MAS) is often reported during weight-bearing ankle dorsiflexion. Increased MAS may follow ankle injury such as ankle sprains, reported as one of the most common injury encountered in sports activities. The goal of this study was to compare the immediate effects of real and sham Mobilization with movement (MWM) at the inferior tibiofibular joint combined with fibular repositioning tape (FRT) on dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM), MAS and pain in subjects with asymmetric and chronic ankle joint dorsiflexion stiffness. Design: Randomized clinical trial with two arms. Participants: 86 subjects between 18 and 30 with asymmetric ankle joint stiffness were selected. Subjects were allocated to one of 3 groups (FMWM, PLACEBO and CONTROL) each receiving a different intervention. Intervention: Treatment consists of MWM on the subject’s symptomatic tibiofibular joint. Following the measurement of outcome variables, FRT was applied to the same joint. Main outcome measures: Measures of MAS were taken with a specific electromechanical device and with clinical measures of pain, rigidity and ROM. Results: For the MAS outcomes, no statistical differences were observed. Concerning the clinical outcomes, the amplitude of the ankle dorsiflexion and the distance during the toe-wall test showed a significant improvement in each group. Conclusion: Further studies, with most targeted patients, should took place to determinate if most significant results could be found on respondent patients to the MWM technique. Those studies should use functional scale and disability index to assess the efficiency of the treatment.
