Abstract
Ransomware attacks have emerged as one of the most significant threats to critical infrastructure, with the healthcare sector being particularly vulnerable. This thesis investigates the economic impact of ransomware on Belgian healthcare institutions, combining qualitative and quantitative methods to provide a comprehensive analysis. Through an extensive review of existing literature, insights from interviews with healthcare IT professionals, and case studies of ransomware incidents, the study highlights the financial, operational, and reputational repercussions of such attacks. The quantitative analysis relies on publicly available data, which is limited due to the lack of detailed information on the financial consequences of ransomware attacks in Belgium. While this constraint limits the scope of the analysis, the study makes the most of the available data to provide valuable insights within the context of a master’s thesis. It illustrates the significant direct costs, such as system restoration and ransom payments, as well as indirect costs, including operational disruptions and loss of public trust. The study concludes with actionable recommendations for policymakers, healthcare administrators, and IT professionals, emphasizing the importance of a proactive approach to cybersecurity. By aligning resources with strategic priorities and fostering collaboration, Belgian healthcare institutions can enhance their resilience against ransomware, safeguarding patient care and public trust.
