- Abstract
- This work studies the emergence and persistence of Jean Giono's reputation as a sympathizer of the Vichy regime and the occupying forces during the Second World War. Through the reading and analysis of his “Journal”, this master’s thesis proposes to apprehend a man famous for his visceral pacifism, but whose image remains tarnished by potential collaboration activities during the Occupation. By confronting Jean Giono's trajectory (during the pre-war years and then during the Occupation) with the privileged testimony offered by his “Journal”, this study seeks to bring some nuance to the polarized discourse that characterizes the debate on this author in order to define his personality with as much finesse as possible. The central objective of this master’s thesis is to evaluate the legitimacy of Jean Giono's depreciative reputation that still circulates in part of public opinion and in the discourse of certain researchers.
