- Abstract
- Aim: Some evidence suggests that heart rate variability-biofeedback (HRV-BF) might be an effective complementary or alternative treatment for symptoms of several mental disorders. The purpose of this literature review was to summarise evidence from randomised controlled trials (RCTs) examining the effectiveness of heart rate variability biofeedback on symptoms of mental disorders. Methods: A literature review was carried out adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Three databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library and PsycINFO) were searched. Only randomised controlled trials written in English or French and answering to PICO criteria were included. Results: A total of 5 RCTs were yielded. These results show the effectiveness of HRV-BF for the treatment of symptoms in multiple mental disorders. Conclusion: The important heterogeneity of the studies, the assessment tools, the sample sizes and the protocol procedures make it difficult to formulate precise and decisive conclusions on the efficacity of HRV-BF in management of mental disorders. A consensus on validated outcome assessments and standardised intervention protocol is necessary. Further research on the applications of HRV-BF for treating psychosomatics and psychiatrics symptoms is warranted.
