- Abstract
- The pharmaceutical industry, marked by strict regulatory requirements, high variability in the demand and a constant pressure to ensure the rapid availability of essential medicines, faces significant logistical challenges. Pharmaceutical logistics hubs play a central role in the supply chain, serving as a central point for medicines, face those logistical challenges head-on. With the rising volume of goods, the increasing complexity of supply chains, and constant pressure to reduce costs, companies are striving to enhance efficiency of their operations in the logistical hubs. However, internal processes within these are often encumbered by inefficiencies such as prolonged waiting times, unnecessary movements, and excess of non-value-added activities. To address these issues, the Lean methodology has emerged as a powerful solution, aiming to minimize waste and streamline operations. The principal approach is the effective management of flows within these hubs, which plays a key role in driving overall efficiency. However, implementing Lean Management principles in the pharmaceutical sector presents unique challenges due to the need for regulatory compliance, the limited shelf life of products, the stringent quality standards, and the urgency associated with certain items.
