Abstract
Objective: To investigate the reliability of measuring pain distribution (PDi) and location (PL) using paper or digital pain drawings (PD) in various musculoskeletal conditions (MC). Methods: The searches were conducted in 6 databases from the inception to 29/11/18. Results: 372 studies were identified and 24 included. Paper PD: Test-retest reliability for PDi was κ: 0,32 and κ: -0,29-0,73 for PL. The intra-rater reliability ranged from ICC of 0,99-0,999 for PDi and κ: 0,68-1 for PL. The inter-rater reliability for PDi ranged from ICC of 0,96-0,99 and κ: 0,61-1 for PL. Digital PD: Test-retest reliability for PDi ranged from ICC of 0,81-0,99 and was 0.7 for PL. The intra-rater reliability for PDi ranged from ICC of 0,992-0,998 and from ICC of 0,925-0,997 for the inter-rater reliability. The test-retest reliability for PL between paper and digital 2D-PD ranged from κ: 0,23-0,90 and from ICC of 0,63-0,93 for PDi. The test-retest reliability for PDi between paper PD and tablet was an ICC of 0,924 and an ICC of 0,996 between digital 2D and 3D-PD. Conclusion: All measurements extracted from the paper and digital PD showed good to excellent reliability except the test-retest reliability for PDi and PL in paper PD and for PL in digital PD (poor-good). Test-retest reliability for PDi and PL between paper and digital 2D-PD was moderate to excellent and was excellent between paper PD and tablet and between digital 2D and 3D-PD. Paper and digital PD are reliable for PDi and PL in diverse MC.
