- The increasing prevalence of obesity and overweight on a global scale necessitates a thorough understanding of the fundamental factors contributing to obesity. Japan, recognized for its reputation as a country with a low prevalence of obesity, is currently witnessing an alarming rise in this health issue among its people. The study aims to examine the link between diet quality, various causes of obesity, and obesity prevalence in Japan, with a specific emphasis on gender disparities. The analysis utilizes panel data spanning the years 2018 to 2021 to examine variations in determinants of BMI distinctive to gender. The findings emphasize the influence of diet quality and other significant factors on BMI. Firstly, women possess higher and more persistent diet quality prevalence than men. Secondly, it is seen that there exists a positive and statistically significant association between short-term diet quality and men's BMI. Conversely, the coefficient for women's diet quality is found to be significant in the long run. Thirdly, in terms of control variables, it is seen that urban living has a substantial short-term impact on men's BMI, while having a job has a positive and significant long-term effect. These variables exert a greater influence on men's BMI compared to other factors. In the context of women, it has been seen that factors such as marriage, age, and university degree attainment exert significant influence as short-term determinants. Conversely, long-term outcomes are notably influenced by factors such as household income satisfaction levels and the experience of frequently feeling depressed/unhappy. The entirety of the discoveries illuminates the intricate connections among several factors and levels of obesity. In order to combat obesity, it is advisable to implement customized policies that accommodate to the specific needs and circumstances of both men and women.
