Abstract
Despite possessing most of the features of an independant state, the Autonomous Administration of North East Syria doesn't seek independance, despite decennia of oppression by the Syrian government. Instead, the AANES seeks an extensive autonomy by promoting its Democratic Confederalism ideology. The only likely reason is its weakness. This weakness is due to several factors at the internal level (local populations), the national level (relationship with the Syrian government) and the external level (intervention of foreign actors, mainly Turkey, Russia and the USA).
