Abstract
The present study provides a deeper linguistic insight into the practice of "sajiao" in Taiwan by using an audio corpus in Taiwanese Mandarin. This corpus contains simulated speech in two styles and three different situations by 42 participants. Part of this corpus is evaluated by 19 annotators, which allows us to distinguish the degree of sajiao and for a more qualitative analysis on the perception of sajiao in China and Taiwan. Series of linguistic and acoustic analysis is conducted on the entire corpus to categorise the lexical usage for sajiao style. Furthermore, with this analysis, we illustrate the acoustic profile of sajiao, which allows us to compare with the description of sajiao in previous studies. We have also made a comparison between different groupes of speakers, with the hope of breaking the stereotype of the exclusiveness of sajiao reserved for certain communities.
