- Abstract
- This master's thesis focuses on a new type of speaker of Galician: the new speaker of Galician, or neofalante. This individual’s mother tongue was Spanish, but decided to shift to Galician at a certain point in life, and is nowadays one of the most active defenders of the language. Neofalantes’ presence questions the status quo in several ways: they are a young, urban population with higher education, who are less likely to accept the old prejudices towards Galician. Through online surveys and personal interviews, this work explores the figure of neofalantes, their attitudes and linguistic practices. In addition, it explores their involvement with reintegrationism, a linguistic trend that considers Galician as a variety of Portuguese, and not an isolated language. All in all, their presence, attitudes and linguistic practices create controversies and tensions with the traditional speakers of Galician, and also Spanish-speaking Galicians, with regard to their legitimacy as Galician speakers and their place in the Galician-speaking community, aspects that will be studied as well.
