- Abstract
- Objective. Several studies asserting the potential usefulness of Sexually Explicit Material (SEM) in sex therapy, this study investigated the factors that influence the use of SEM in sex therapy by Belgian sexologists. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) was applied in order to identify the determinants of SEM usage. Methods. Psychological determinants derived from the TPB (attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intention) were evaluated by means of a self-reported online survey among 59 Belgian sexologists. Principle Component Analyses revealed 7 factors underlying the items of the questionnaire based on the TPB scales. Results. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that 51% of the variance in intention and 41% of the variance in behavior were explained by the TPB. Perceived advantages and descriptive norms significantly predicted the intention to use SEM, and the intention predicted the use of SEM. Conclusion. The dimensions of the TPB explain the intention to use SEM and the actual use of SEM by Belgian sexologists in sex therapy, with perceived advantages and descriptive norms representing the main determinants. The results highlight the need of future studies to assess the usefulness of various types of SEM in the treatment of different clinical cases.
