Abstract
This thesis addresses the research question of individual identification within the context of fire salamanders. Our experimental framework centers on the extraction of their unique identity patterns, notably the yellow spot formations present on their back, as a first step. We then explore two different methods for the identification task: the first one relies on Local Binary Patterns as a descriptor for the identity pattern, while the second employs a patch-wise approach leveraging image moments as a feature. By focusing on handcrafted features, our research aims to deepen the understanding of this complex task.
