- Abstract
- Dilma Rousseff's presidency (2011-2016) was characterised by a foreign policy that sought to seek autonomy and strengthen its relations at the international level, especially with emerging economies and developing countries. During her administration, the idea of a multipolar world, a strengthening of South-South diplomacy and the desire that Brazil plays an active role in the resolution of conflicts and global issues were promoted. The relationship between Brazil and the US during Dilma Rousseff's and Barack Obama's tenure was marked by certain challenges, although there were also areas of cooperation. In 2013, documents leaked by Edward Snowden were revealed indicating that the US had been spying on the communications of Rousseff and other Brazilian leaders. As a result, bilateral relations deteriorated and led to the cancellation of Rousseff's planned state visit to the US. Despite the tensions, the two countries maintained trade exchanges and cooperation in economic areas such as investment and agricultural trade.
