- Abstract
- English is a part of many people’s daily life all over the world. There are numerous people who write or speak English, although they are not specialists of the language. However, few people arguably wonder about the variety of English they use, supposing they are aware that different varieties of English exist. Through a quantitative study of some extracts of two tourism websites, this dissertation therefore aims to explore the variety of English (e.g. BrE or AmE) used in India and Germany (and more generally Europe) in the field of tourism. The focus is on the spelling criterion to distinguish between British and American English. The study reveals that the German tourism website under investigation can be seen to mainly use the British English spelling standard, whereas the Indian website seems to lean away from this standard and to display more American English influence.
