Abstract
Deciding to learn a foreign language and deciding to study in a foreign country using a language of instruction which is not mastered are choices motivated by numerous criteria. Representations following the language play a big role when making these decisions. Influenced and influential, representations shape our perception of the world. Non-French-speaking students who come study at the Université catholique de Louvain, a French-speaking university in Belgium, are not the exception. Through semi-directed interviews, we studied the influence of representations on the motivations of non-French-speaking students who decided to study in Belgium. Representations around the language, living abroad, French-speaking countries like France and Belgium as well as representations around the UCLouvain were analyzed to observe their influence on the international students who decided to come to study in this university.
