Abstract
Blockchain technology began appearing in supply chains around 2016. Various business sectors have developed and adopted this technology over the years, and it is proving game-changing for many organizations, particularly in terms of social, environmental, and economic sustainability. Its transparency, data security, and operational efficiency have the potential to revolutionise the agri-food supply chain as we know it. However, the innovative nature of this technology means that its full potential has yet to be exploited and therefore presents certain limitations. The complexity and high volume of data, specific technical requirements, the essential need for coordination between the various stakeholders, and the uncertainty of the legal environment represent the major challenges hindering the optimal use of blockchain technology in the agri-food sector. This thesis is based on the testimonials of 10 international companies in the agri-food sector making effective use of blockchain in their supply chain, as well as interviews with 5 experts in applied blockchain in the supply chain. The aim of these case studies and interviews is to highlight the advantages and potential difficulties for a sectoral company in adopting the technology, with a view to identifying best practices. The preliminary definition of clear objectives, network implementation zones, data compatibility checks, and pilot test projects is crucial. So is the selection of the right type of blockchain technology to meet these objectives, as well as the strategic alignment between the parties for synchronization purposes. Finally, ongoing monitoring of the technology's evolution and an outlook on new technologies that may complement it are important to ensure its longevity and long-term effectiveness.
