- Abstract
- Aim: The aim of this study is multiple. Our objective is to identify risk factors, for the chronification of musculoskeletal pain that have been identified in the literature, starting off with longitudinal observational studies. It is a pilot study and serves as a screening tool as for the quantity and quality of the available literature, in order to see if a more ambitious work is feasible. Methods: We searched for relevant articles in MEDLINE, published between the year 2000 and end of July 2018. Strict inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied guaranteeing relative good quality of the included studies, as our research question is thought to be broad. Results: Several risk (predictive) factors were identified across the whole bio-psycho-social (BPS) spectrum, such as: perceived physical health, a sedentary lifestyle in regards to physical activity, a high BMI, sleep troubles, smoking, older age, high mechanical exposure, severe and intense pain at onset, a comorbidity of chronic pain in another area of the body, a history of pain in the same region, urgent urgency level, catastrophization and high psychological demands at work. The quality of evidence seemed overall reasonable given the type of study. Conclusion: Several risk factors across the BPS spectrum have been identified. The future systematic review shall investigate other databases and include other study types to help identify more risk factors and to better assess the evidence to date.
