- Abstract
- The present dissertation discusses the integration of Young Adult Literature (YAL) in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and/or English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom. Its aim is to demonstrate the positive effects of YAL on language acquisition as well as on pupils’ engagement in reading. The work focuses on three subgenres of YAL – fantasy, dystopia and romance – and explores the possibilities that books from these subgenres offer. The first two parts examine the three subgenres from a theoretical point of view with a literary review. It is illustrated by means of two series and a novel – J. K. Rowling’s series Harry Potter, Suzanne Collins’ series The Hunger Games and John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars – then, the research exposes their educational interest which is using them to teach specific topics such as tolerance, politics, empathy, etc. The third and last part of this dissertation involves a practical application of the use of YAL in the EFL/ESL classroom by creating and testing a whole 4-hour sequence based on Extensive Reading (ER).
