Abstract
This master dissertation focuses on the eye-catching elements at the beginning of articles in British online quality and popular newspapers. The analysis was focused on the answers of two research questions: To what extent do quality and tabloids articles differ in terms of article length, headlines and the use of pictures? Which aspect(s) of the headline and the lead does the main picture highlight? Elements such as the formality or informality of headlines, the font sizes of headlines and leads, the questions answered by the headlines and the leads, what features in the pictures and the links between the headlines, the leads and the pictures, etc., were analyzed in order to understand and identify the elements that catch the attention of readers when they open an online article, whether from quality or popular online British newspapers.
