- Abstract
- This Master thesis is dedicated to the design and prototyping of an active bioreactor, designed to facilitate esophageal transplantation. The project focuses on creating a device capable of reproducing the in vivo conditions necessary for effective recellularization of esophageal grafts. Emphasis is placed on the mechanical stimulation of the graft, mimicking the natural peristaltic movements of the esophagus. To achieve this, tests were conducted to validate the use of a Foley catheter, allowing the simulation of food bolus passage. This bioreactor innovates by utilizing the aorta and vein for cellular delivery, thereby improving cell diffusion in the esophageal wall. After validating the catheter’s effectiveness, a detailed model of the bioreactor was developed, with the aim of future realization. The expected results of this prototype aim to offer promising prospects for the development of viable and functional esophageal grafts for transplantation.
