- Abstract
- This thesis analyzes the season metaphors in History of Kieu by Nguyen Du, one of most famous and significant Vietnamese literary works, and the translation of these metaphors in three French translations by Nguyen Van Vinh, Nguyen Khac Vien and Luu Hoai. This study is based on the theories of Translation Studies and the metaphor translation strategies proposed by Newmark (1980) and Hagström (2002). Based on Aristotle's definition of metaphor, we identify the metaphorical expressions related to the seasons in the text and analyze them linguistically and culturally. We also discuss the problems posed by these expressions when translating the History of Kieu into French. We finally compare the translations of the metaphors of the seasons from three French versions by Nguyen Van Vinh, Nguyen Khac Vien and Luu Hoai, then explore which strategies these translators choose for the expressions and why. From this study, we conclude that the choice of translation method is based on the intention of the translator and the target audience.
