- Abstract
- Charles Forsman’s The End of the F***ing World is complex due to the contrast between the minimalism present in several graphic and narrative elements of the book and its complex themes. In this analysis, the first part focuses on minimalism as a genre and how it is used in the graphic style of the book, as well as in its narrative aspect. Forsman uses different techniques to convey the characters’ impressions and thoughts. The second part of this master dissertation discusses how the minimalism of such piece is in fact deceptive because of the violence and the emotions that are expressed during several scenes. James and Alyssa are two teenagers who run away to embark on a journey into adulthood. During their adventure, they discover the violent reality of their world and the place they want to hold in society. By using the different characteristics specific to comic books or graphic novels, the author communicates ideas relating to the protagonists’ feelings in front of the events and the people they meet during their adventure. Whether visible, invisible or verbal, the violence present in Forsman’s work expresses the social issues present in their world and how the teenagers position themselves with regard to them. On their journey, James and Alyssa encounter several adults, who are represented as deeply flawed and unhelpful to them in their search for answers.
