Abstract
It has been recognised in the literature that different purchasing strategies are required for different products/services. In order to provide recommendations to managers for their purchasing strategic choices several models have been created by different authors. Those models are mainly referred to as the purchasing portfolio models. The most famous, recommended and used model is the Kraljic matrix created by Peter Kraljic in 1983 (Gelderman and Van Weele, 2005; Hesping and Schiele, 2015; Cox, 2015). For many years several authors have been criticizing the existing purchasing portfolio models, highlighting different of their weaknesses. They argue that those models can notably mislead managers in their purchasing strategic choices (Gelderman and Van Weele, 2005). Andrew Cox, one of those authors, thinks that it is really necessary to create a new model in order to correctly help buyers (Cox, 2015). In the light of those critics it has appeared interesting to test the Kraljic matrix for a specific category of products/services. The objective of this paper is to understand to what extent the strategic recommendations provided by the Kraljic matrix are coherent/accurate for the sourcing category of electronic payment systems in the e-commerce.
