Abstract
Politeness has always been part of each culture and society and has been expressed through various means following different cultural norms. Cultural differences can lead to various misunderstandings and communicative difficulties during intercultural interactions. In a business context, codes of politeness are therefore essential to understand and learn in order to do business successfully with business partners from all over the world. This dissertation aims at identifying some codes of politeness in the Chinese workplace through different comparisons between various types of sources, including scientific and non-scientific sources such as books, articles, online blogs and tools, along with an online survey conducted among Chinese people currently working in China. This method allows verifying the validity of the statements made by the different sources analysed in the theoretical part by comparing them with the results of the survey, which, to a certain extent, reflect the current Chinese business practices in today’s China.
