- Abstract
- This master thesis is written in the context of my studies at the LSM. The analysis is based on a practical case that I was given the opportunity to address during an internship in a renowned company, the Deutsche Post DHL in Bonn, Germany. I worked for four months in the DHL Global Forwarding entity, in the Airfreight department. Beside regular ad hoc tasks, the scope of my main project – and project-based thesis – consists in a Study Case for the Solution Design team. The aim is to analyze the prospective need for a decision-aid tool supporting the choices of air routings of customer's shipments. The potential development of the tool itself is out of scope of this thesis. The focus is rather on a preliminary analysis regarding the advantages that the Routing Engine could bring, balanced with the risks and challenges that might be faced. The objective of this work consists in evaluating whether it is worth to develop a Routing Engine at DHL Global Forwarding Airfreight. This thesis defends the idea that a Routing Engine would bring high value in the DHL Global Forwarding Airfreight organization. However, implementing such a tool is not without any risks which are examined. A regular consultation with the stakeholders is crucial, combined with a proper change management and a phased approach. Anticipating the impacts of the implementation of a Routing Engine is a key in order to manage a smooth transition and ensure that the tool could be used successfully.
