Abstract
The aim of this work is to analyze what factors influence the diffusion of innovation, and to apply the concepts to the diffusion of hydrogen in the automotive sector in order to identify the different barriers and drivers. The work is articulated in three parts including a theoretical survey of the different theories discussing the diffusion and adoption of an innovation, an application to the diffusion of hydrogen in the automotive sector, and finally interviews aiming to verify complete and compare the results obtained in the second part. All five speakers are directly involved in hydrogen and the automotive industry. The results show that there are currently three main barriers to the diffusion of hydrogen in the automotive industry. Firstly, the total cost of ownership is currently far too high. Secondly, the infrastructure is insufficient or even non-existent as far as filling stations are concerned. Finally, the hydrogen industry is still highly carbonated, which makes hydrogen cars polluting. It would therefore be interesting to develop and subsidies the truck and taxi sector in the first instance in order to create an infrastructure that would then be sufficient to start large-scale commercialization. In addition, this will allow individuals to see the relevance of such a technology.
