Abstract
As businesses face increasing environmental and social complexities, the food industry has come under particular scrutiny for its substantial impact on ecosystems and social justice. This thesis examines the relevance of B Corporation certification for Belgian agri-food companies, focusing on its potential benefits and challenges. B Corp certification, which recognises for-profit entities that meet rigorous social and environmental standards, is gaining ground globally, but faces barriers such as a complex certification process, limited awareness in Europe and legitimacy issues associated with large corporations. The objective of this study is to elaborate the relevance of the B Corp certification for companies active in the Belgian food industry. Through a combination of theoretical analysis and empirical research involving B Corp-certified companies and food consumers, this study reveals that the advantages of B Corp certification - such as international recognition, a holistic approach to improving business practices and a positive impact on stakeholders - generally outweigh its disadvantages. Despite the challenges, B Corp certification offers food businesses significant opportunities to improve their practices and stand out in a competitive market. The results indicate that B Corp certification holds great promise and should be sought out by companies that align themselves with its values, particularly as it continues to evolve and grow in importance in Europe.
