Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of a gender subtext in dressage and showjumping competition at international elite level. I will describe the results of a qualitative study based on interviews with 12 participants, men and women competing or working in high level of dressage and showjumping, to analyze the similarities and the differences between men and women riders in these different disciplines of horse-riding. I will make a gender subtext analysis by re-reading, deconstructing, and reconstructing these interviews on a gender analysis base. While there has been qualitative research on equestrian sports and gender, and empirical study of the gender subtext in organizations, there is still a lack of analysis of the presence of a gender subtext in equestrian sports and in sports, overall. As a sex-integrated sport, horse-riding is a perfect case study to analyze the presence of a gender subtext in high level competitions.
