- Abstract
- In 2019, 10% of the global population – namely 789 million people – still lacked access to electricity, with the majority (75%) living in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Ethiopia, one of the worst electrified countries in the world, the electrification rate only reached 45% (33% through the grid), highlighting a precarious situation. To tackle this universal lack of access to energy, ENGIE Mobisol entered the African market in 2011 and aimed at providing off-grid local communities with electricity through decentralised solar solutions. In 2018, ENGIE Mobisol entered the Ethiopian market thanks to the establishment of a partnership with Vera International. Today, both companies want to extend their partnership by providing Pay-As-You-Go Solar Home Systems, a more affordable payment method to electrify poor communities. The objectives of this joint Master's thesis are various. On the one hand, it aims to provide a development plan for ENGIE Mobisol and Vera International to secure their presence and sales in Ethiopia. On the other hand, this Master's thesis also has an economic, social, and environmental purpose as ENGIE Mobisol’s products benefit local and rural communities. Besides providing people with electricity, it also offers them some security and new business opportunities.
