- Abstract
- Over the world, recreational running is an easy way to stay physically active. Over the last 3 decades, it has become increasingly popular. ITBS is the first cause of lateral knee pain and second most common cause of knee pain in runners with an incidence as high as 16% of all running-related overuse injuries. The aim of this scoping review is to achieve a clear understanding of the current knowledge concerning the efficiency of conservative treatment for managing ITBS. This scoping review was developed using PRISMA-ScR guidelines. We used the following keywords and other synonyms: “iliotibial band”, “physiotherapy”, “conservative”. Duplicates were removed and two reviewers independently performed the articles selection. Eligibility criteria were based on the population, intervention, comparison and outcome “PICO” framework. We totally record 791 articles through database searching from Pubmed, Embase and Scopus. After removing duplicates, 530 articles were screened. Following the eligibility criteria, 100 selected articles were selected for full text assessment. Finally, 19 articles were extracted. Only 5 randomized control trials (RCT) on the topic have been extracted from the literature. Their Methodologies are judged “moderate” ranging from 57% to 68%. 14 other articles were selected: 6 case reports, 1 double case report and 7 case series. 5 are qualified as moderate (RCTs), 11 were considered limited and 3 with a poor quality. Most of the articles provides case series or case report conclusions without any systematic methodologies. There are insufficient evidences in the current literature to support the usefulness of conservative treatment in ITBS.
