- Abstract
- This thesis uses the gravity equation to estimate the changes in trade patterns of former socialist states. The model includes 22 communist countries that have been under Soviet Union’s(SU) control. These countries are taken as treated countries and this list includes former Soviet Union members, Soviet controlled eastern bloc countries and the Balkans. The panel data covers the time period from 1996 to 2014.Economic classification dummies are included in the gravity equation to characterize the peculiarity of these trade changes. The results indicate that treated countries could overcome economic shocks and create strong economic ties with Europe and other states in the world. However, their trade with Russia increased by lower rates over this period, compared with other partners.
