- Abstract
- If the interpretation is to be understood otherwise, we must analyze Gadamer's concept of play differently than the commentators have done. To do this, we must study the aesthetic sources and the anthropological sources of Gadamer. From the study of Kant, we are going to identify two epistemic models from which to think about play: in physiological anthropology play is a biological reaction (toy model), while in pragmatic anthropology it is free action ( player model). These two extremes are illustrated by Herbert Spencer and Friedrich Schiller respectively. Among anthropological sources, Gadamer mobilizes the studies of Frederik J.J. Buytendijk and J. Huizinga to forge a concept of play: for him play is the self-presentation of movement by itself. We can approach this definition in 3 ways: participation for movement, configuration for rule and execution for intention. Gadamer thus proposes a model of the participant that integrates the toy as well as the player, the patient as well as the actor in the event of the game. But his understanding reduces the game to representation and only translates the linguistic dimension of the phenomenon.
