Abstract
Over the last few centuries, the Industrial Revolution has fragmented rivers considerably, due in particular to the massive construction of dams. The awareness of this problem on the river environment, and mainly on fishes migratory, has only emerged in recent years. It is in the context of rehabilitation of the ecological continuity of the Meuse River that a 1 : 5 scale model of the pool pass of Rivière was built by the Direction des Recherches Hydrauliques (Hydraulic Research Branch) of the Service Public de Wallonie (Public Service of Wallonia). The work presented is a continuation of previous studies aimed at optimizing fish passes. First, it seeks to study the influence of shading on the movements of upward movement since winged predation remains a factor in the reluctance to move up crossing structures. Second, it examines the possibility of adapting a pool pass for eels by means of bottom substrates. Finally an eel ramp model was built to study the impact of longitudinal and transversal slopes on the crossing. At the end of the analysis about the shading effect, the influence of shading was not confirmed for daytime crossings and the intended effect was not met. Indeed, it appears that the crepuscular behavior of salmons prevails over the influence of a shading device. Its effect remains an open question and the study of other parameters should make it possible to confirm its added value. As far as eels are concerned, ways to improve pool passes deserve to be explored in the future. In addition, trends are emerging on the beneficial influence of the cross slope on upstream movement. The pinned-type substrate presented is used by eels, although future studies on its optimization will make it possible to quantify its interest with respect to other existing substrates.
