Abstract
Banks and the financial sector are key players on the road to net zero. European banks and other financial institutions have signed the 2015 Paris Agreement and are committing to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Most banks and financial institutions integrate ESG into their decision-making process and embed ESG risks into their risk assessment. The main role of banks is to promote sustainable instruments such as sustainability-linked loans, green bonds, or green loans. Sustainable finance accelerates the decarbonization process. This research paper examines the various regulations, disclosures, and guidelines that exist to help banks navigate the realm of sustainability. The thesis elucidates how banks and financial institutions own the necessary tools to bring us to a low-carbon economy.
