Abstract
Today’s business world is characterized by intense competitive pressures and a growing market demand for customized and innovative products. Combined with an increasing pressure for improving efficiency and responsiveness, this leads to the transformation of manufacturing companies. As a result, factories need to adopt high level of integration, connectivity and collaboration between processes, which, in turn, involves the adoption of smart technological innovations. These technologies, enabling real-time information sharing, transparency and connectivity, have brought the fourth industrial revolution, also called “Industry 4.0”. On top of technological changes, industry 4.0 also implies organizational changes based on value creation for customers, employees and the environment, which, combined with technologies, are significantly impacting the supply chain performance of the manufacturing companies. Through a multiple case-study, this thesis aims at analyzing the effects and potential gains in supply chain performance from the fourth industrial revolution in the Belgian manufacturing sector.
