Abstract

Ce mémoire traite du sujet de la ségrégation raciale aux Etats-Unis à travers le sous-titrage du film "The Help", sorti en 2011 et réalisé par Tate Taylor. Ce film est une adaptation cinématographique du roman éponyme écrit par Kathryn Stockett. Ce mémoire est divisé en trois parties. L'introduction retrace l'histoire de la ségrégation raciale aux Etats-Unis. Elle est suivie de la traduction partielle du film (les sous-titres réalisés), puis d'une section "commentaires". Cette dernière aborde les difficultés rencontrées lors du sous-titrage, les choix de traduction, et comporte une comparaison avec les sous-titres officiels. This master's thesis examines the issue of racial segregation in the United States through the subtitling of the film "The Help", released in 2011 and directed by Tate Taylor. The film is a cinematic adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's novel of the same name. This thesis is divided into three parts. The introduction provides a historical review of racial segregation in the United States. It is followed by a partial translation of the film (the subtitles), and then a 'comments' section. This final section discusses the challenges faced during the subtitling process, the translation choices made, and includes a comparison with the official subtitles.
