Abstract
This MA dissertation concentrates on the Reformation in Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall. In her novel, she reinterprets the characters who played an important role in the English Reformation and the Reformation itself during Henry VIII’s reign. First of all, it is suggested that she depicts three types of characters: the Reformers, the defenders of the Catholic faith and the in-between. Furthermore, it is argued that she portrays the English Reformation as an act imposed from above, viz. by the King and the Parliament through acts, and from below, viz. by Reformers and other citizens in England. Despite Mantel’s desire to hold historical accuracy, they are gaps between her novel and the reality as she reinterprets the past in her own manner. Finally, it is put forward that the BBC screen adaptation transforms the source of the Reformation and the book’s narrative perspective.
