- Abstract
- A general awareness on environmental issues has raised and it is now time to find concrete ways to use resources wisely and sustainably. A stone in the building of this major objective could be to produce new materials from bio-based feedstock. Currently, glycerol mainly comes from bio-based feedstock and is considered as a platform molecule due to is reactivity. Lactic acid, on the other hand, is a highly-valuable molecule that is used to create new PLA materials. Finding new ways to convert glycerol to lactic acid, a two-step reaction, would thus be a great advance for the environment and materials science. The goal of this thesis is to see if using a hybrid chemo-enzymatic system is an interesting approach to convert glycerol to lactic acid. This work attempts to gather and quantify the different parameters that influence the activity of the chemo-catalyst. With this in hand, it also attempts to identify the important parameters for the cascade to take place.
