- Abstract
- Background Currently in Belgium, a shortage is affecting the nursing profession. To help them, the Belgian government has created the « Fond des Blouses Blanches » to hire nurses or support staff. At CHU UCL Namur - Dinant site, technical-pharmaceutical assistants have been hired to take care of medication management directly in the care unit (CU). This function is called APUS. Objectives The objectives are 1) to evaluate the impact of the service provided by APUS and 2) to assess staff’s satisfaction. Method A prospective before and after study was carried out in two pilots CU : a combined surgery and internal medicine CU (C3/D3) and an internal medicine CU (D2). Firstly, three indicators were assessed before and after implementation of the project : 1) the nursing time spared with APUS’s help in the nominative prescription circuit ; 2) financial management of floor stock ; 3) adequate drug storage conditions. Secondly, surveys have been carried out to measure the satisfaction of nursing staff and APUS staff. Results After project deployment, with the transfert of certain tasks to the APUS, the median daily net gain in nursing time was 42 minutes in C3/D3 CU and 70 minutes in D2 CU. Financially, for each unit, the gap between theoretical and counted inventories reduced. However, in D2 unit, drug losses increased by 132% over three months. In both units, compliance for the drugs’ storage conditions improved. Overall, the nursing staff is satisfied with this collaboration. APUS’s opinion is more nuanced. Conclusion APUS has achieved the goal of their new mission. This study shows that involving the pharmacy team in the CU has a beneficial impact on the daily work of nursing staff. However, this requires a major investment by the pharmacy to ensure that the project runs smoothly.
