Abstract
More than ever before, transportation and its ecological footprint is at the centre of debates. Following the European Commission's implementation of the Fourth Railway Package, the question of performance improvement is addressed. After a review of the literature about competition impact on the railway sector, this thesis focuses on the possible alternatives to enhance performance in railway. The analysis includes a comparison of train sectors in Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark and Austria and clarifies the potential impacts of competition implementation. This will reveal a lack of investments along with potential misallocation of funds for Belgium. Finally, the main issues of Belgium passenger rail market are addressed. Competition might help the railway in Belgium to perform better but, as a pre-requisite, other issues need to be addressed in order to observe the positive impacts of competition.
