Abstract
The Sacro Monte della Beata Vergine del Soccorso is located in the village of Ossuccio, in the Lombard province of Como. It consists of fourteen chapels scattered along the path linking the village to the cliff top sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Soccorso (m. 419 snm). In each chapel, sculptures and frescoes illustrate a mystery of the Rosary in the order of the narrative. Although construction of the sanctuary began in 1537, it was only later, in 1699, that the complex was consecrated, while the chronology of the chapels' construction is probably between around 1640 and 1690. The Sacro Monte d'Ossuccio was conceived as a simplified imitation and reproduction of the Sacro Monte in Varese, both architecturally and artistically. Artistic continuity links the two complexes, because of the Silva workshop participating in both projects: Francesco in Varese, Agostino and Gianfrancesco in Ossuccio. While most of the sculpted groups are attributed to Agostino, some remain anonymous: for the purpose of this dissertation, a comparative stylistic analysis of the first three chapels enables us to attribute them to the same sculptor, part of the Silva workshop. Created in the post-Tridentine context, the sculpted groups and frescoes express a running out of the spirit of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. This can be seen in the distance between their iconography and the prescriptions of bishops such as Saint Charles Borromeo, Frederic Borromeo and Gabriele Paleotti.
