Abstract
This thesis has been undertaken in a context where, to date, there is limited formal research on technologies and microfinance in Europe. While FinTechs are disrupting the formal financial sector in developed countries, their ability to provide ubiquitous and low-cost access to financial services is seen as a key enabler for financial inclusion in developing countries. As European microfinance institutions struggle to expand outreach and reach financial sustainability, one could wonder how they perceive innovative and agile technologies in that respect. This thesis studies the role of FinTechs in the business model of Western European microfinance institutions with a qualitative approach. The findings of the research suggest that technology is the way to go. In spite of the obstacles along the way of digitalization, microfinance institutions will be able to reap the benefits from the adoption of FinTechs within the limits of their high touch model.
