Abstract: enThis thesis explores in depth the use value of language registers in two volumes of Marcel Pagnol's novel L'Eau des collines. We present an overview of the diversity of language registers in order to create an appropriate theoretical basis for the analysis of the dialogues in Pagnol's novel. The analysis of the 23 excerpts from the novel tells us that the language registers attributed by Pagnol (2005) to conversations can tell us about the characteristics of the characters in the novel, namely: their social origin, their level of education, their profession, their interpersonal relationships as well as their attitudes when speaking. Thus, the portrait of the different characters of the novel has been painted in a vivid way. Communication situations in a rural area of Provence were also highlighted thanks to the language registers manipulated by Pagnol. After analyses, we propose exercises to train students to identify and use language registers in an appropriate way in their expression in French.
