Abstract
This MA dissertation explores the Open Educational Resources (OERs) phenomenon. The first chapter tackles the definition of OER and analyse the three parts of the term: ‘open’, ‘educational’ and ‘resources’. The second chapter presents the open licences and investigates the case of the Creative Commons – the most famous open licence initiative. The third chapter is based on a small survey carried in Belgium to determine the level of awareness people have of OERs. The fourth chapter is about the impact of Open Educational Resources on education and offers two examples of Open Educational Practices. The fifth chapter analyses the money-related issues surrounding the OER phenomenon: the NonCommercial aspect of the Creative Commons and the cost of OERs. This chapter will also explore the various sustainability models developed by Dholakia and Downes. The last chapter investigates the quality of OERs through the creation of an OER evaluation grid. Finally, the conclusion takes the form of a beginner guide to Open Educational Resources that can work as a stand-alone and contains all the necessary information to understand the OER phenomenon.
