- Abstract
- The novels A Friend of the Earth (Boyle), The Ministry for the Future (Robinson), The Overstory (Powers) and The Wallcreeper (Zink) all show their protagonists taking action to protest against specific environmental issues or global warming. Forming a sub-branch of climate fiction, environmental protest fiction involves an exploration of human agency in the context of the Anthropocene and forms a repertoire of texts to support the imagination around possible protest actions. The four case studies will be analyzed on the following points: how two of them revisit an actual episode of protest, the range of tactics they illustrate, the opinions they convey regarding more radical and even violent actions, and lastly, whether or not the plot shows signs that the fight will result in the desired outcome or will fail to avert the collapse.
