Abstract
Engaging in small talk is part of our daily interactions. Over recent years, these seemingly casual and unimportant conversations have gained recognition within the business community. This dissertation aims to study the impact of small talk, particularly for individuals with limited professional experience, such as interns or new graduates, through a survey. The research explores various aspects of small talk including its functions, impact, perception and frequency. Given the significance of English as the current official lingua franca in the business world, the use of this language in informal conversations is also addressed in the survey. Additionally, this research seeks to evaluate the correlation between small talk and leaders’ communication strategies by analysing a series of videos from experts in leadership.
