- Abstract
- The opportunity this thesis is trying to capture is the challenge that is represented when conducting board of directors’ meetings. To have every board member’s maximum input and expertise in a board in which different competences and skills are present, and sometimes conflicting. What is observed in this thesis is that some board members experience difficulties saying what they really think and giving the insights they master thanks to their field of experience when sensing conflict. This thesis is able to allocate various reasons to the occurrence of conflict avoidance through a qualitative manner and to identify how the chairman could alter this behavior. It will conduct a transversal analysis linking the humanitarian aspect with the economical and scientific way of thinking. Because on paper, one can consider it a strategic move to bring together different people that master complementary but yet exhaustive skills and knowledges. However, that doesn’t mean that they will necessarily pay off in the way one would expect. There can of course be various reasons to explain the malfunctioning of a board of directors but the one this thesis is going to embody is the phenomenon of conflict avoidance and how a chairman could overcome this behavior.
