Abstract
During the month of January 2021, an unusual event occurred in the financial world. GameStop, an American company that sells video games, saw its share value rise dramatically. This is all the more unexpected as the company's health was rather precarious. This rise in share price was caused by what is called in financial language a "short squeeze". In this thesis, the GameStop affair will be explained, both in terms of the context that led to this phenomenon and the short squeeze phenomenon itself. The WallStreetBets reddit group will be discussed, and all the financial mechanisms related to this case will be explained. Topics such as hedge funds, short selling, stock buybacks, put options and market manipulation will be discussed. This work will be composed of an empirical part which aims at analysing a database of more than 1200 Belgian investors who invested in GameStop. The demographic profile, the trades and the portfolio of the investors will be analysed.
